Sanita's verhaal
Alhoewel de woningnood voor velen voor problemen zorgt, bood het Sanita uit Letland juist kansen. “Daardoor zijn er veel banen in de architectuur. En de architectuur is sowieso interessanter dan in Letland want Nederlandse mensen durven daarmee te experimenteren.”
Haar master in de architectuur volgde ze in Tilburg. Toch koos ze in 2017 voor Rotterdam. “ Ik werkte in Delft. Rotterdam ligt tussen die twee steden in. En het is een grote stad. Dat biedt normaal veel kansen.”
De juiste plekjes
Inmiddels heeft de stad haar hart veroverd. “Rotterdam heeft veel te bieden, er zijn veel plekken om wat te drinken en er zijn veel andere steden dichtbij. Als je maar weet waar je heen moet.” En Sanita weet inmiddels dan ook precies de juiste plekjes te vinden. “Ik hou van de skyline. Vooral in het donker is deze stad fascinerend. Ik hou van de reflectie van alle lichten uit de stad op de Maas in het donker. Mijn favoriete plek is dan ook het zicht bij de SS Rotterdam op de Erasmusbrug en hotel New York in de avond.” Ze is niet van plan dit uitzicht in te wisselen voor dat in Letland of Denemarken, waar ze ook even heeft gewoond. “Ik sta wel open voor andere steden maar Rotterdam is voor mij nu het beste.”
Vrienden
Ze is hier dan ook helemaal geaard, niet alleen qua werk, maar ook sociaal. Haar sociale kring heeft ze vooral opgebouwd door vrijwilligerswerk in Zuid. “Ik hou van tuinieren, lekker buiten in de zon. Dus heb ik vrijwilligerswerk gezocht waarbij ik dat kan doen. Zo heb ik interessante mensen ontmoet zoals verpleegsters en designers. Die had ik niet ontmoet als ik het werk niet had gedaan.”
Dat is dan ook haar advies aan andere nieuwkomers. “Maak vrienden en bouw een netwerk op. Ontmoet mensen die hetzelfde denken als jij.” Tussen haar werk, haar vrijwilligerswerk en haar vrienden beweegt ze zich gemakkelijk in Nederland. “Je kunt overal heen fietsen hier, dat is heel gemakkelijk,” lacht ze.
Sanitas story
Although the housing shortage causes problems for many, Sanita from Latvia actually offered opportunities. “As a result, there are many jobs in architecture. And architecture is more interesting anyway than in Latvia because Dutch people dare to experiment with it.”
She took her master’s in architecture in Tilburg. Yet she chose Rotterdam in 2017. ” I was working in Delft. Rotterdam is in between those two cities. And it’s a big city. That normally offers a lot of opportunities.”
The right spots
Meanwhile, the city has captured her heart. “Rotterdam has a lot to offer, there are Meanwhile, the city has won her heart. “Rotterdam has a lot to offer, there are many places to have a drink and there are many other cities nearby. As long as you know where to go.” And Sanita, meanwhile, knows exactly where to find the right spots. “I love the skyline. Especially in the dark, this city is fascinating. I love the reflection of all the lights from the city on the Maas in the dark. So my favourite spot is the view at the SS Rotterdam of the Erasmus Bridge and Hotel New York in the evening.” She has no intention of exchanging this view for that in Latvia or Denmark, where she also lived for a while. “I am open to other cities but Rotterdam is best for me right now.”
Friends
She is therefore completely grounded here, not only in terms of work, but also socially. She has built her social circle mainly through volunteering in Zuid. “I love gardening, being outside in the sun. So I sought voluntary work where I can do that. That’s how I met interesting people like nurses and designers. I wouldn’t have met those if I hadn’t done the work.”
That is also her advice to other newcomers. “Make friends and build a network. Meet people who think the same as you.” Between her work, her volunteer work and her friends, she moves easily in the Netherlands. “You can go anywhere cycling, that’s really easy,” she laughs.
