Andrea's verhaal (English below)
“Ik vind fietsen echt heel leuk. Dat heb ik al gedaan in Frankrijk en Peru, maar hier is het prettiger,” vertelt Andrea blij. “Nederland is een land met veel kansen en een land waar ik mezelf kan zijn.” Andrea is geboren in Lima in Peru. Toen ze zes was, verhuisde ze naar Frankrijk. Ze groeide op in Lyon maar kwam naar Nederland voor een stage in Venlo.
Talen
Toch wilde ze haar studie afmaken in Rotterdam. “Want dat is een grotere stad. In Rotterdam had ik het gevoel dat ik meer kon doen met mijn talen. Zo heeft Venlo meer invloeden uit Duitsland en ik spreek geen Duits. Maar ik spreek wel Frans en Spaans en ik heb bedrijfskunde gestudeerd dus ik dacht dat de haven mij meer werk kon bieden.” En dat klopte. Ze heeft een leuke baan en dat is niet alles. “Ik maakte veel vrienden hier.”
Dat Andrea zo snel haar plek kan vinden in Nederland, is niet gek. Haar opa is Nederlander. Ze was dan ook al een keertje op bezoek in Nederland geweest toen ze jong was. “Toen heeft hij me een paar woorden Nederlands geleerd. Maar toen ik in Nederland kwam en Nederlands ging leren, begon ik op de cursus alsnog met de basis.” Haar advies aan andere nieuwkomers is dan ook om de taal te leren. “Zo kun je jezelf beter integreren met Nederlandse mensen. Je kun bijvoorbeeld Nederlands leren in de bibliotheek in Rotterdam.”
Veilig
En ze staat erop: “Je moet een fiets hebben!” lacht ze. “Want zo kun je snel naar veel verschillende plekken. En het voelt ook veiliger met mijn fiets dan lopend.” Dat is vooral fijn in de nacht in sommige buurten, als ze zich minder veilig voelt. “Maar ik heb het gevoel dat het al beter wordt.”
Winter
Ze weet nog niet of ze lang zal blijven. “Nederland brengt veel goede dingen mee, er zijn veel mogelijkheden, maar soms denk ik eraan om naar een ander land te gaan. Want de winters zijn wel moeilijk. Dan is het koud en donker.” Gelukkig heeft ze veel internationale vrienden om haar daar doorheen te slepen.
Andreas story
“I really enjoy cycling. I have already done that in France and Peru, but here it is more enjoyable,” Andrea says happily. ‘The Netherlands is a country with many opportunities and a country where I can be myself.’ Andrea was born in Lima in Peru. When she was six, she moved to France. She grew up in Lyon but came to the Netherlands for an internship in Venlo.
Languages
Still, she wanted to finish her studies in Rotterdam. “Because that’s a bigger city. In Rotterdam, I felt I could do more with my languages. For instance, Venlo has more influences from Germany and I don’t speak German. But I do speak French and Spanish and I studied business administration so I thought the port could offer me more work.” And it did. She got a nice job and that’s not all. ‘I made a lot of friends here.’
That Andrea could find her place in the Netherlands so quickly is not surprising. Her grandfather is Dutch. She had therefore already visited the Netherlands once when she was young. “Then he taught me a few words of Dutch. But when I came to the Netherlands and started learning Dutch, I still started with the basics on the course.” So her advice to other newcomers is to learn the language. “That way you can better integrate yourself with Dutch people. You can learn Dutch at the library in Rotterdam, for example.”
Safe
And she insists: ‘You must have a bike!’ she laughs. “Because that way you can get to many different places quickly. And it also feels safer with my bike than walking.” This is especially nice at night in some neighbourhoods, when she feels less safe. “But I feel it’s already getting better.”
Winter
She does not yet know whether she will stay long. “The Netherlands brings many good things, there are many opportunities, but sometimes I think about going to another country. Because the winters are hard, though. Then it’s cold and dark.” Fortunately, she has many international friends to get her through that.
