Veronica's verhaal (English below)
“Ik vind het niet goed dat de gemeente grote gebouwen in het centrum bouwt in plaats van groene ontmoetingsplekken. Mensen willen ontmoetingsplekken,” zegt Veronica uit Litouwen. “Maar je hebt altijd een haat-liefde relatie met de plek waar je woont denk ik. Verder kan ik in Rotterdam goed leven, ik krijg hier het stadsgevoel en toch kan ik in 30 minuten van de ene naar de andere kant fietsen.” Ze woont nu in het Westen. ”Dus ik kom vaak in het Museumkwartier, vooral de waterkant en het park. En ik ben altijd aanwezig op de Rotterdamse dakendagen in juni, daar houd ik ook echt van.”
Geen outsider meer
Ze vergelijkt Rotterdam met Maastricht, waar ze in 2013 kwam voor haar bachelor. “Rotterdam heeft een grotere mix van mensen. Daardoor voel ik me comfortabeler. In Maastricht is dat minder. Daardoor voelde ik me anders, als een outsider.” Na haar tijd in Maastricht verliet ze het land dan ook weer. “Ik wist niet wat ik wilde doen. Dus toen verhuisde ik naar Ierland, waar mijn moeder woont. Vanuit daar zocht ik een baan, overal in Europa eigenlijk. Het was per toeval dat ik een stage vond bij een Nederlands consultancybedrijf.”
Engels
Daar mocht ze expats helpen integreren in de Nederlandse cultuur. Dat vond ze zo leuk dat ze zich inschreef voor een master aan de Erasmus universiteit. Daar is de voertaal Engels en Nederlands. Makkelijk voor Veronica, maar lastig om de taal te leren. “De Nederlandse taal is heel moeilijk voor mij. Gelukkig heb ik wel wat geleerd bij cursussen en wat opgepikt bij mensen op straat. Ik probeer ook mijn e-mails in Nederlands te lezen, maar mijn vrienden komen van overal in de wereld dus dan praten we ook Engels. Dat helpt niet. Terwijl het wel handig is om Nederlands te kunnen spreken.”
Toekomst
Voorlopig heeft ze andere dingen aan haar hoofd. Zo heeft ze net een nieuwe functie bij de Erasmus universiteit en is ze hard op zoek naar een nieuw woning met haar vriend. “Dat zijn beide nieuwe uitdagingen. Vooral een huis zoeken, daar moet je echt op tijd mee beginnen als je hier nieuw komt!”
Ze maakt zich ook zorgen over de laatste nieuwe politieke ontwikkelingen. “De kloof tussen elkaar wordt groter. Dus ik hoop dat we allemaal rekening blijven houden met elkaar,” zucht Veronica. “Want uiteindelijk zijn we allemaal mensen.”
Veronicas story
“I don’t like the fact that the municipality builds big buildings in the city centre instead of green meeting places. People want meeting places,” says Veronica from Lithuania. “But you always have a love-hate relationship with the place you live in I think. Furthermore, I can live well in Rotterdam, I get the city feeling here and yet I can cycle from one side to the other in 30 minutes.” She now lives in the West. “So I often visit the Museum Quarter, especially the waterfront and the park. And I always attend the Rotterdam rooftop days in June, I really love that too.”
No longer an outsider
She compares Rotterdam to Maastricht, where she came in 2013 for her undergraduate degree. “Rotterdam has a bigger mix of people. That makes me feel more comfortable. In Maastricht, there is less of that. That made me feel different, like an outsider.” So after her time in Maastricht, she left the country again. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do. So then I moved to Ireland, where my mother lives. From there I looked for a job, anywhere in Europe actually. It was by chance that I found an internship with a Dutch consultancy company.”
Future
For now, she has other things on her mind. For instance, she just got a new position at Erasmus University and is looking very hard for a new home with her boyfriend. “Those are both new challenges. Especially looking for a house, you really need to start that on time when you are new here!”
She is also worried about the latest new political developments. “The gap between each other is widening. So I hope we all continue to be considerate of each other,” sighs Veronica. “Because at the end of the day, we are all human beings.”
