Ismini's verhaal (English below)
“Ik verhuis niet naar een stad als het geen contact heeft met water,” zegt Ismini, oorspronkelijk afkomstig van een klein Grieks dorpje, jawel, aan het water. Daar houdt de gelijkenis tussen Rotterdam en haar thuisstad dan ook wel op. “Die heeft maar 20.000 inwoners, dus dat is kleiner natuurlijk. En het heeft beter weer,” lacht ze. Maar volgens haar compenseert Rotterdam dat goed met vele andere dingen.
Geen vreemde
“Rotterdam is een internationale en open stad. Ik hou van het multiculturele aspect. Iedereen komt overal vandaan, en komt uit hetzelfde schuitje als ik. Dat voelt fijn, alsof ik geen vreemde ben, alsof je iets deelt met al deze mensen. Zo voelt het bekend, ook al ben ik niet in mijn eigen land.”
De stad omarmen
Het was een PhD die haar in 2011 naar Nederland bracht. Eerst kwam ze terecht in Delft, maar deze stad vond ze te klein en te weinig representatief voor Nederland. Ze zocht en vond een baan in Rotterdam, dichter bij het water. Ze omarmde de stad en maakte veel vrienden.Dat is ook wat ze andere nieuwkomers adviseert. “Omarm de vibe van de stad, ga eropuit, praat met de buren, leer mensen kennen met meer ervaring, zij kennen de stad.”
Inmiddels heeft ze zelfs een appartement gekocht. “I’m here to stay,” zegt ze stellig. Hopelijk blijft Rotterdam ook zoals het is. “En behoudt het haar open karakter voor iedereen: zwart of wit, welk geloof dan ook… ik hoop dat de stad iedereen blijft omarmen.”
Isminis story
“I won’t move to a city if it doesn’t have contact with water,” says Ismini, originally from a small Greek village, yes, on the water. That’s where the similarity between Rotterdam and her hometown ends, then. “That one only has 20,000 inhabitants, so it’s smaller of course. And it has better weather,” she laughs. But according to her, Rotterdam compensates well for that with many other things.
Not a stranger
“Rotterdam is an international and open city. I love the multicultural aspect. Everyone comes from everywhere, and comes from the same boat as me. That feels nice, like I’m not a stranger, like you share something with all these people. It feels familiar that way, even though I’m not in my own country.”
Embrace the city
It was a PhD that brought her to the Netherlands in 2011. At first she ended up in Delft, but she found this city too small and not representative enough of the Netherlands. She looked for and found a job in Rotterdam, closer to the water. She embraced the city and made many friends.This is also what she advises other newcomers. “Embrace the vibe of the city, go out, talk to the neighbors, get to know people with more experience, they know the city.”
Meanwhile, she has even bought an apartment. “I’m here to stay,” she says adamantly. Hopefully Rotterdam will also stay as it is. “And keeps its open character for everyone: black or white, whatever faith … I hope the city continues to embrace everyone.”
