Clydes verhaal (English below)
Deze filmfanaat woonde al even in Nederland, maar in oktober 2022 verhuisde Clyde naar Rotterdam voor zijn studie Filmwetenschappen. Ook was het fijn dat deze Canadees dan dichtbij zijn ouders zou wonen. “Maar de stad op zichzelf spreekt me ook aan als filmmaker.” Zo doet hij vrijwilligerswerk bij het Internationale Film Festival in Rotterdam. “Cultureel gezien vind ik Rotterdam meer open dan Vancouver. En minder overweldigend.”
“En het is een fijne stad om te zijn als student, zo is de jongere generatie heel open. Je kunt genoeg vrienden maken. Ook is er veel leuks te doen; er is genoeg te ontdekken!” Dat adviseert hij dan ook andere nieuwkomers om te doen. “Wees niet bang. En ontdek je eigen scene.”
Delfshaven
Zijn scene is naast die van de filmmakers, Delfshaven. Toen hij aankwam in zijn nieuwe buurt, heeft hij dan ook veel tijd besteed aan het leren kennen van het meest historische stukje Rotterdam. Hij kent daar inmiddels dan ook de beste plekken en de meeste mensen. “Alles in Delfshaven is goed te bereiken. En het heeft een bruisend nachtleven!”
Meer thuis dan ooit
Toch verlaat hij de stad weer voor een korte periode. “Ik wil reizen en films maken en kijken waar dat me brengt,” zegt hij nuchter. Nu brengt hem dat weer tijdelijk terug naar Canada waar hij zijn studie vervolgt. Gelukkig lijkt Vancouver volgens Clyde op Rotterdam. “Net als Rotterdam is Vancouver een multiculturele stad waar verschillende smaken en verhalen samenkomen.” Toch is zijn plan is om na zijn studie de Atlantische oceaan weer over te steken en neer te strijken in Rotterdam. “Na zo lang in Europa te hebben gewoond, voel ik me hier meer thuis dan ooit.”
Clydes story
This film fanatic had been living in the Netherlands for a while, but in October 2022, Clyde moved to Rotterdam to study Film. It was also nice that this Canadian would live close to his parents. “But the city itself also appeals to me as a filmmaker.” For example, he volunteers at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. “Culturally, I find Rotterdam more open than Vancouver. And less overwhelming.”
“And it’s a nice city to be in as a student, the younger generation is very free. You can make enough friends. There is also a lot of fun to do; there is plenty to discover!” He also advises other newcomers to do this. “Don’t be afraid. And discover your own scene.”
Delfshaven
His scene is, next to that of the filmmakers, Delfshaven. When he arrived in his new neighborhood, he spent a lot of time getting to know the most historic part of Rotterdam. He now knows the best places and most people there. “Everything in Delfshaven is easy to reach. And it has a vibrant nightlife!”
More at home than ever
Yet he leaves the city again for a short period. “I want to travel and make films and see where that takes me,” he says matter-of-factly. Now that brings him back to Canada temporarily where he continues his studies. Fortunately, according to Clyde, Vancouver is similar to Rotterdam. “Just like Rotterdam, Vancouver is a multicultural city where different tastes and stories come together.” Still, his plan is to cross the Atlantic Ocean again after his studies and settle in Rotterdam. “After living in Europe for so long, I feel more at home here than ever.”
