Festive Opening of ‘Faces of Rotterdam’ on Diversity Day at Theater Zuidplein
On October 7, Diversity Day, Theater Zuidplein became the city’s beating heart. Amidst great interest from approximately 200 visitors, the ‘Faces of Rotterdam’ exhibition was officially opened. It was an evening filled with stories, music, and meaningful encounters between Rotterdammers from all over the world.
The evening was opened by Willemijn de Koning, Project Leader of Faces of Rotterdam. After a warm welcome and an introduction to the project’s mission, she handed the floor to the man behind the lens: photographer Robert Tjalondo. He shared his vision on the 170+ nationalities that enrich the city and explained how he sought to capture the soul of these residents in his portraits.
Encounter and Symbolism
One of the most talked-about parts of the program took place outside on the square: speed-dating with the subjects. Among the 39 life-sized portraits, visitors had the chance to engage in conversation with the people featured in the photos. This created a beautiful dynamic, making the quote from participant Christos (Cyprus) instantly palpable: “In Rotterdam, you see: these people actually live here.”
The official ceremony by Alderman Faouzi Achbar also made a deep impression. He raised the inclusion flag, specially designed by Leendert Jacob. This flag symbolizes connection: with the colors of the Rotterdam flag at its heart, all flags of the world can be formed.
Cultural Cross-pollination
Inside the hall, writer and poet Ishmail Kamara (Sierra Leone) and international cellist Martha Gonzalez (Spain) provided a goosebump-inducing moment. Their joint performance was a powerful translation of the cultural cross-pollination that Faces of Rotterdam stands for. Both are also featured participants in the project.
Exhibition and Film
Following the official proceedings and the encounters on the square, the evening moved indoors. While enjoying drinks, guests were able to view the extensive indoor exhibition, consisting of no fewer than 125 photographs. The short film ‘Faces of Rotterdam: a glimpse into our 170+ nationalities’ also premiered, offering an intimate look at the city’s diversity.
