Did you know that Rotterdam has residents of more than 170 nationalities? Making it the most diverse cities in Europe? Time to celebrate this beautiful fact! Faces of Rotterdam does this by photographing one Rotterdammer per each nationality and letting them tell their story. Why did they choose Rotterdam? What do they like about this city, and what not so much? They also give a tip to the next newcomer. In this way, we breathe new life into forgotten stories and give nationalities a face. We recognise each other in these stories. That connects. And this is how we celebrate the diversity of Rotterdam, the Netherlands and Europe! Join this voyage of discovery! Explore the portraits, dive into the stories and get inspired by the diversity of Rotterdam. We are still looking for Rotterdammers of certain nationalities, sponsors and locations for exhibitions
We show that migration is a important part of the Rotterdam history and identity. This is important for the past Γ‘nd for today and the future. These stories remind us that we're all connected and diversity is a power.
All the portraits and stories of these Rotterdam citizens of all different nationalities capture the diversity of the city. This makes Faces of Rotterdam a kind of time capsule. In 100 years' time, we will still be able to see what Rotterdam looked like today.
We not only spotlight people of various nationalities, but also connect them. All the people in the picture give a tip to the next newcomer. This way, a link is created. They also come together and you can meet them and ask them: why did you choose Rotterdam?
Faces of Rotterdam wants to be accessible to all Rotterdammers. Thus, we previously showed a preview of the first portraits at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam (IFFR). Now we hope for more exhibitions, indoors and outdoors, film screenings, an audio tour and a book. Wondering what this will look like?
Behind Faces of Rotterdam
Photographer Robert Tjalondo saw that Rotterdam had inhabitants of as many as 170+ nationalities. These numbers struck him as chilly. He was curious about the people behind the numbers. Because each number represents a unique story, a journey that led them to this vibrant city. With Faces of Rotterdam, he wants to celebrate the city’s diversity and gain more understanding between all its residents.
