Keanz' verhaal (English below)
“Ik hou van avonturen en meer culturen leren kennen,” zegt Keanz uit Uganda. Hij doet zaken in Europa. “En die reis wilde ik omarmen. Je kunt beter zaken doen met andere landen als je er bent geweest. Dus wilde ik andere landen zien.” Hij reisde dan ook de wereld rond; zo heeft hij ook even in het Verenigd Koninkrijk gewoond. Maar Rotterdam is de enige stad die voelde alsof het klopte. “En in deze grote wereld is het lastig om zo’n plek te vinden. Dus ja, ik bleef hier dan ook langer dan ik dacht,” lacht hij.Â
Nu voelt Keanz zich hier helemaal thuis. Dat is ook niet gek, want Uganda lijkt met 40 volken en stammen en nog meer binnenlandse talen wel een beetje op Rotterdam. “Deze stad heeft veel kleuren en culturen dus daar herken ik mezelf wel in. Daarom kun je hier ook veel ervaren. Het vibreert, je weet dat je niet alleen bent. En tegelijk voel ik me geen toerist zoals in Amsterdam,” lacht hij.Â
Mensen observeren
Toen hij aankwam in 2013 voelde hij eerst wat paniek. “Dat is altijd op een nieuwe plek. Dan vraag je je af wat je moet doen en ga je zoeken. Maar ik bedacht me al snel dat ik hier rustig aan wilde doen en mensen en energieën wilde observeren. Want de mensen maken de stad, niet de gebouwen. Zo zag ik het prachtige van de stad en kon ik die omarmen.”
Communiceren
Hij kon de mensen alleen nog niet altijd verstaan. “Ik was heel benieuwd wat alle mensen zeiden op straat,” lacht hij. Dus heeft hij een Nederlandse cursus gevolgd. Nu spreekt hij Nederlands, maar ziet de taal niet als belangrijkste manier om te communiceren. “Want we communiceren met verschillende dingen, ook met je lichaam of andere geluiden.”
Integratie
Zo integreerde hij op zijn manier. “Integratie betekent voor mij dat je omarmt wie je bent en open bent om een andere cultuur te omarmen. Sommige interpreteren het als vergeten van waar je vandaan komt en een andere cultuur overnemen. Ik weet waar ik vandaan kom en ben daar juist trots op. Dat helpt mij ook om open te staan om nieuwe mensen, culturen en talen te leren.”
Keanz his story
“I like adventures and getting to know more cultures,” says Keanz from Uganda. He does business in Europe. “And I wanted to embrace that journey. You can do business with other countries better if you have been there. So I wanted to see other countries.” So he travelled around the world; for instance, he also lived in the UK for a while. But Rotterdam is the only city that felt like it was right. “And in this big world, it’s hard to find a place like that. So yes, so I stayed here longer than I thought,” he laughs.
Now Keanz feels right at home here. This is not surprising, as Uganda, with 40 peoples and tribes and even more domestic languages, is a bit like Rotterdam. “This city has many colours and cultures so I recognise myself in that. That’s why you can experience a lot here. It vibrates, you know you are not alone. And at the same time, I don’t feel like a tourist like in Amsterdam,” he laughs.
Observing people
When he arrived in 2013, he felt some panic at first. “That’s always in a new place. Then you wonder what to do and start searching. But I soon realised that I wanted to take it easy here and observe people and energies. Because the people make the city, not the buildings. That’s how I saw the beauty of the city and was able to embrace it.”
Communicate
He just couldn’t always understand people yet. “I was very curious what all the people were saying on the street,” he laughs. So he took a Dutch course. Now he speaks Dutch, but does not see the language as the main way to communicate. “Because we communicate with different things, also with your body or other sounds,” he says.
Integration
So he integrated in his own way. “Integration to me means embracing who you are and being open to embrace another culture. Some interpret it as forgetting where you come from and adopting another culture. I know where I come from and am actually proud of that. That also helps me to be open to learning new people, cultures and languages.”
