Bobs verhaal (English below)
Onze havenstad verwelkomde de zeeman Bob vijftig jaar geleden geheel gepast per boot. “Toen ik 24 jaar was, vaarde ik al weg uit de Filipijnen. Na zeven jaar had ik een stop in Rotterdam.” Daar vond hij zijn liefde. Niet alleen zijn vrouw (uit Nijmegen), maar ook de haven. Daar is hij dan ook 25 jaar blijven werken. “Als ik geen werk had kunnen vinden, was ik misschien wel terug naar de Filipijnen gegaan. Maar dat lukte altijd.” Hij bleef, trouwde met een Nederlandse vrouw en kreeg twee kinderen.
Drugsverslaafden
Toch twijfelde hij in de jaren 0 nog wel even om toch weer weg te gaan. “Toen waren er veel drugsverslaagden rondom Rotterdam Centraal. Dat zorgde in mijn woonwijk voor overlast. Daarom dacht ik wel om weg te gaan want ik vond dat niet goed voor mijn kinderen om daar op te groeien. Maar toch zijn we gebleven.” Hij woont nu nog in de Provenierswijk.
Nederlands leren
“Ik heb mijn draai nu wel gevonden. Mijn kinderen ook.” Daarvoor moest hij wel Nederlands leren. “Daar heb ik een cursus voor gedaan en mijn vrouw hielp mij daar natuurlijk mee.” Hij zou andere nieuwkomers ook adviseren om goed de taal te leren en de cultuur te adopteren.
De Filipijnen
Hij is wel verschillende keren terug gegaan naar de Filipijnen met zijn vrouw en kinderen. “Vorig jaar ging ik nog samen met mijn zoon naar de plaats waar ik geboren ben. Dat was leuk, ik herkende alle plekken. Maar mijn nichtjes en neefjes helaas niet.” Maar voor toeristen zou hij het land zeker aanraden. “Iedereen praat makkelijk Engels, al hebben we een ander accent dan de Amerikanen. Dus dat is ideaal voor de toeristen.”
Bobs story
Our port city welcomed sailor Bob by boat fifty years ago, very fittingly. “When I was 24, I sailed away from the Philippines. After seven years I had a stop in Rotterdam.” That is where he found his love. Not only his wife (from Nijmegen), but also the port. He continued to work there for 25 years. “If I had not been able to find work, I might have gone back to the Philippines. But that always worked out.” He stayed, married a Dutch woman and had two children.
Drug addicts
Yet in the 0s, he still had some doubts about leaving again. “Back then, there were a lot of drug addicts around Rotterdam Central Station. That caused nuisance in my neighbourhood. That’s why I thought about leaving because I didn’t think it would be good for my children to grow up there. But we stayed anyway.” He still lives in the Proveniers neighbourhood now.
Learning Dutch
“Now i found my way here. So have my children.” Before that, he did have to learn Dutch. “I did a course for that and of course my wife helped me with that.” He would also advise other newcomers to learn the language well and adopt the culture.
The Philippines
He did go back to the Philippines several times with his wife and children. “Just last year, I went with my son to the place where I was born. That was fun, I recognised all the places. But my nieces and nephews unfortunately did not.” But for tourists, he would definitely recommend the country. “Everyone speaks English easily, all though we have a different accent than Americans. But that makes it easy for tourists.”
