Maricris' verhaal (English below)
“Op de sportschool ben ik bekend als de ‘latino-teacher’, want ik draai altijd muziek uit Latijns-Amerika,” lacht Maricris uit Bolivia. Zo probeert deze zumba-lerares haar thuisregio dichtbij haar te houden. Daarnaast houdt ze zich aan de meeste Boliviaanse tradities. Zo kookt ze elke middag een warme lunch, danst ze nog salsa, spreekt ze nog steeds Spaans en Portugees tegen haar kinderen en heeft ze vooral vrienden uit Latijns-Amerika of Nederlanders die in het buitenland hebben gewoond. “Ik denk dat je je tradities van thuis kunt behouden en tegelijkertijd kunt integreren met de cultuur en maatschappij hier. Dus volgens mij is het goed als je je eigen taal blijft praten en je eigen eten koken, maar je moet niet vergeten dat je hier leeft met andere mensen uit andere landen. Dus je moet jezelf wel openstellen voor hen en de cultuur hier.”
Nóg meer diversiteit
Maricris kwam hier 12 jaar met haar Braziliaanse man mee, die de hele wereld rond reist voor zijn werk. Eerst in Amerika en toen in Mexico. Maar hier in Rotterdam zijn ze geland: al 12 jaar woont ze op dezelfde plek. Misschien omdat de hele wereld hier vertegenwoordigd is in de mensen die hier wonen. “Ik wist dat hier veel verschillende mensen zouden wonen, maar niet zó veel. De laatste vijf jaar zie ik mensen uit steeds meer verschillende landen en dat is geweldig. In Bolivia zijn sowieso al minder mensen van andere landen, maar sinds de overheid is veranderd, zijn er minder buitenlandse bedrijven dus zijn er steeds minder mensen uit andere landen die daar werken.”
Gewoon anders
Ze ziet gigantische verschillen met Bolivia.” Bolivia is een kleiner land qua inwoners en is armer. Ook heeft het land een andere temperatuur, ander eten, natuur en cultuur. Het grootste verschil zit ‘m denk ik in de mensen en het dagelijkse leven. Hier kunnen kinderen alleen en vrij rond lopen of fietsen naar school. Hier is alles georganiseerd en gepland, daar leven we dag bij dag. Mensen daar zijn wat simpeler, puur, en delen alles. Hier zijn mensen direct en denken vooral aan hun eigen doelen. Iedereen leeft hun eigen leven. Maar niets is beter, het is gewoon anders.”
Maricris her story
“At the gym, I am known as the “Latin Teacher” because I always play music from Latin America,” laughs Maricris from Bolivia. This is how this zumba teacher tries to keep her home region close to her. She also adheres to most Bolivian traditions. For instance, she cooks a hot lunch every afternoon, still dances salsa, still speaks Spanish to her children, and has mostly friends from Latin America or Dutch people who have lived abroad. “I think you can keep your traditions from home and at the same time integrate with the culture and society here. So I think it’s good if you keep speaking your own language and cooking your own food, but you have to remember that you live here with other people from other countries. So you do have to open yourself up to them and the culture here.”
Even more diversity
Maricris came here 12 years with her Brazilian husband, who travels all over the world for his work. First in America and then in Mexico. But here in Rotterdam they landed: for 12 years she has lived in the same place. Perhaps because the whole world is represented here in the people who live here. “I knew many different people would live here, but not that many. In the last five years, I see people from more and more different countries, which is great.There are fewer people from other countries in Bolivia anyway, but since the government changed, there are fewer foreign companies so there are fewer and fewer people from other countries working there.”
Just different
She sees gigantic differences from Bolivia. “Bolivia is a smaller country in terms of population and is poorer. The country also has a different temperature, food, nature and culture. I think the biggest difference is in the people and daily life. Here, children can walk or cycle to school alone and freely. Here everything is organised and planned, there we live day by day. People there are more simple, pure, and share everything. Here, people are direct and think mainly about their own goals. Everyone lives their own life. But nothing is better, it’s just different.”
