Nikola's verhaal
“Rotterdam is eigenlijk de wereld in het klein,” zegt Nikola uit Servië. “Ik heb hier zoveel mensen ontmoet.. dat vind ik echt super interessant.” Hij kwam hier in 2009 vanwege de wereldwijde economische crisis. Eerst in Eindhoven, waar hij ook af is gestudeerd in scheikunde. Ondanks de stad bekend voor hem was, kon hij toch zijn plek niet helemaal vinden. Die zocht hij in Utrecht, Den Haag, Brielle, Oostvoorne en uiteindelijk in Rotterdam. “Ik wilde nieuwe mensen ontmoeten. Rotterdam heeft veel mensen uit verschillende culturen. En de maat van Rotterdam is perfect: groot, maar drie à vier keer kleiner dan Belgrado.”
Koud en direct
Hij ontmoette inderdaad nieuwe mensen, maar makkelijk was het niet. “In Belgrado zijn mensen open en warm. In Nederland zijn ze wat kouder. Maar als je voldoende moeite doet, laten ze je toe in hun vriendenkring en huis. En dan word je echt goede vrienden. Maar dat duurt wat langer.” De directheid van Rotterdammers kan hij wel waarderen. Dan is het makkelijker om nee te zeggen. Dat creëert minder problemen. In Servië is het lastig om nee te zeggen.”
Door de dip
Hij ziet meer verschillen dan alleen in de mensen uit zijn thuisstad Belgrado en Rotterdam. “Jaren geleden zou ik zeggen het eten, maar ik zie dat de keuze aan restaurants en het eten enorm groeit dus ik kan nu alles vinden wat ik nodig heb. Ik vind het jammer dat er geen bergen zijn, maar daar kunnen we niets aan doen. Net als het weer. Het is hier grijs en nat. In de winter is het wel kouder in Belgrado maar niet zo grijs. Maar goed. In een training van de universiteit heb ik een grafiek gezien die je gesteldheid beschrijft als je naar een nieuw land verhuist. Dus de grafiek begint als je net in Nederland aankomt. Dan ben je in een euforische fase. Daarna kom je in de winter in een dip. De meeste mensen komen daarna in een betere fase. Dan gaan de balkjes in de grafiek omhoog. Dus mijn advies zou zijn dat je gewoon door moet gaan in de dip. Het is niet zo erg,” lacht hij.
Om door dat dipje te komen, adviseert Nikola nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten. “Die dezelfde interesses hebben als jij. Dat kan via eindeloze mogelijkheden zoals verschillende apps. En omarm de verandering. Je bent hier, of het nu tijdelijk is of voor altijd. Probeer nieuwe ervaringen.”
Nikola heeft inmiddels een huis gekocht hier en heeft met zijn vrouw een kind. Het is dan ook de bedoeling om hier voor langere periode te blijven.
Nikola's story
“Rotterdam is actually the world in miniature,” says Nikola from Serbia. “I’ve met so many people here… I find that really interesting.” He came here in 2009 because of the global economic crisis. First in Eindhoven, where he also graduated in chemistry. Although the city was familiar to him, he still couldn’t quite find his niche. He sought that in Utrecht, The Hague, Brielle, Oostvoorne and finally in Rotterdam. “I wanted to meet new people. Rotterdam has a lot of people from different cultures. And the size of Rotterdam is perfect: big, but three to four times smaller than Belgrade.”
Cold and direct
He did indeed meet new people, but it wasn’t easy. “In Belgrade, people are open and warm. In the Netherlands, they are a bit colder. But if you make enough effort, they allow you into their circle of friends and home. And then you become really good friends. But that takes a bit longer.” He can appreciate the directness of Rotterdammers. Then it is easier to say no. That creates fewer problems. In Serbia, it’s hard to say no.”
Through the dip
He sees more differences than just in the people from his hometown of Belgrade and Rotterdam. “Years ago I would say the food, but I see that the choice of restaurants and food is growing tremendously so I can find everything I need now. I regret that there are no mountains, but there’s nothing we can do about that. Just like the weather. It is grey and wet here. In winter it is colder in Belgrade but not so grey. Anyway. In a university training course, I saw a graph that describes your state of mind when you move to a new country. So the graph starts when you just arrive in the Netherlands. Then you are in a euphoric phase. Then you enter a dip in winter. After that, most people enter a better phase. Then the bars in the graph go up. So my advice would be to just keep going in the dip. It’s not that bad,” he laughs.
To get through that dip, Nikola advises meeting new people. “Who have the same interests as you. You can do that through endless opportunities like different apps. And embrace change. You are here, whether temporarily or forever. Try new experiences.”
Nikola has since bought a house here and has a wife and child. It is therefore the intention to stay here for a longer period.
