Nina's verhaal (English below)
“De verschillende mensen en kleuren maken de stad mooi,” zegt Nina uit Slovenië. Al vanaf jongs af aan was ze gefascineerd door Nederland. “Ik heb altijd al van de natuur en de mensen gehouden. Hier zijn mensen meer open en direct. Mensen in Slovenië zijn aardig, ze zullen je helpen. Maar ze zullen je niet direct vertellen wat ze willen zeggen.”
Verliefd
Nina probeerde een baan te vinden om in Nederland te kunnen wonen. Dat lukte niet meteen, maar ze vond in 2016 wel een baan in Luxemburg. Vanaf daar plande ze een weekendtrip in Rotterdam. “Ik werd meteen verliefd op de stad. Het heeft goede vibes en is cultureel. Ik vind het geweldig dat als je op straat loopt, je zoveel talen hoort. En dat er zoveel verschillende mensen zijn die zoveel verschillende culturen, eten en kunst meebrengen. Het is magisch.”
Vanaf dat weekend was het haar doel om in Rotterdam te blijven wonen. “Als ik een doel heb, doe ik alles om dat te bereiken.” Dus bleef ze doorzoeken naar een baan. Ze vond er eerst een in Terneuzen, die ze met beide handen aangreep. Maar het was niet Rotterdam dus ze bleef doorzoeken. Vorig jaar vond ze eindelijk een baan in onze mooie stad. “Dit is mijn favoriete stad. Ik ben heel blij hier. Ik wil nooit meer weg. Hier hoor ik thuis.”
Niet afhankelijk van Engels
Nu ze hier woont, heeft ze weer een nieuw doel. “Ik wil vloeiend Nederlands kunnen spreken. Ik wil niet afhankelijk zijn van Engels, dat voelt lui.” Ze leert de Nederlandse taal nu op Duolingo. Eén zin staat haar nog goed bij. “Ik ben een appel,” zegt ze lachend.
Ninas story
“The different people and colors make the city beautiful,” says Nina from Slovenia. From a young age, she was fascinated by the Netherlands. “I have always loved the nature and people. Here, people are more open and direct. People in Slovenia are nice, they will help you. But they won’t tell you directly what they want to say.”
In love
Nina tried to find a job to live in the Netherlands. That didn’t work out immediately, but she did find a job in Luxembourg in 2016. From there, she planned a weekend trip to Rotterdam. “I immediately fell in love with the city. It has good vibes and is cultural. I love that when you walk down the street, you hear so many languages. And that there are so many different people bringing so many different cultures, food and art. It’s magical.”
From that weekend, her goal was to stay in Rotterdam. “If I have a goal, I will do anything to achieve it,” she says. So she kept searching for a job. She first found one in Terneuzen, which she grabbed with both hands. But it ws not Rotterdam so she kept searching. Last year, she finally found a job in our beautiful city. “This is my favourite city. I am very happy here. I never want to leave. This is where I belong.”
Not dependent on English
Now that she lives here, she has another new goal. “I want to be able to speak Dutch fluently. I don’t want to depend on English, that feels lazy.” She is now learning the Dutch language on Duolingo. She’ll never forget one specific sentence. “I’m an apple,” she laughs.
